Adam Ginning to Make NHL Debut. Leads Phantoms in Plus-Minus

April 11, 2023

Lehigh Valley, PA – The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled defenseman Adam Ginning from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, according to Interim General Manager, Daniel Briere. Additionally, forward Zayde Wisdom has been reassigned by the Flyers from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to the Reading Royals of the ECHL.

Ginning, 23, has played in 65 games with the Phantoms this season scoring 3-16-19 while leading the team with a +25 rating. The all-time Lehigh Valley single-season record for plus-minus is +24 by Nicolas Aube-Kubel in 2017-18.

Ginning was a Round 2 selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018 and played the past two seasons with Farjestads BK Karlstad of the Swedish Hockey League prior to his North American rookie season this year. The steady and consistent blueliner also represented Sweden twice at the World Juniors tournament in 2019 and 2020.

The Linköping, Sweden native has received attention for his improvement and overall consistency of his play.

“Yeah, my biggest part of the game is the defense part of it,” Ginning said. “I take a lot of pride in playing good defensively. And that’s what I’m trying to do and I think I’ve been doing that. And I try to play physical and I like playing here in the smaller rink too. I think that makes it a little easier to play good defense for me.”

Ginning is slated to become the fifth Lehigh Valley Phantoms recall to make his NHL debut with the Flyers and also the 42nd Lehigh Valley prospect all-time to get the call. Other Phantoms who made their NHL debuts this season included Olle Lycksell, Sam Ersson, Elliot Desnoyers and Tyson Foerster.

Wisdom, 20, has scored 3-7-10 in 45 games with the Phantoms this season and has also played in three games with Reading where he has two assists. Philadelphia’s fourth-round choice in 2020 also played with the Phantoms in the shortened 2020-21 season scoring 7-11-18 in 28 games at just 18 years old when he became the youngest player in franchise history.

Last year, Wisdom returned to his Major Juniors team with the Kingston Frontenacs following off-season shoulder surgery and scored 9-29-38 in 43 games in the Ontario Hockey League.

The Phantoms have CLINCHED their spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs and now have three games remaining in the regular season in efforts to obtain home-ice advantage for the first round. The Phantoms play at the Bridgeport Islanders on Wednesday night and then return to PPL Center for the regular-season home finale on Friday against the Charlotte Checkers, who are a potential first-round matchup for the Phantoms.
