Tempers Ignite on Throwback Night
Wisdom Scores in Return, Ciernik Nets First North American Pro Goal
October 24, 2026
Allentown, PA – Zayde Wisdom scored just 30 seconds into his return to the lineup and Alex Ciernik celebrated his first North American professional goal, but the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (3-3-1) saw their three-game winning streak snapped in a heated 7-2 loss to the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night at PPL Center.
Wisdom (1st) provided an immediate spark on the opening shift in his first appearance since October 11, while Ciernik (1st) supplied a third-period bright spot. Jakob Pelletier countered with a second-period hat trick as Syracuse took the opener of the four-game season series between the two clubs.
The evening also featured familiar colors and a familiar face back in the lineup.
Lehigh Valley debuted its purple-shouldered throwback uniforms honoring the Philadelphia Phantoms’ 1998 Calder Cup championship team, while captain Garrett Wilson returned for his first Phantoms appearance since March 8 of last season.

Loaned to Lehigh Valley from Philadelphia earlier in the afternoon, Wilson resumed his captain duties skating alongside Wisdom and Noah Powell after beginning the season on the Flyers’ Opening Night roster.
The throwback theme extended beyond the uniforms as tensions boiled over in the third period.
Lehigh Valley was assessed a team-record 97 penalty minutes, surpassing the previous Lehigh Valley mark of 74 set on December 21, 2024, at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in another 7-2 defeat.
Once the puck dropped, Wisdom wasted little time getting to work.
Ty Murchison connected with Wisdom on a stretch pass through the neutral zone, sending the winger into Syracuse territory with speed. Wisdom reached the top of the right circle and sniped a shot over Olivier Rodrigue’s blocker at :30, giving Lehigh Valley a 1-0 advantage on the first shot of the game for either team.
With an assist on Wisdom’s opening goal, Murchison extended his point streak to four consecutive games, and Helge Grans also picked up a helper in his season debut.
Carson Bjarnason protected the early lead by denying former Phantom Brendan Furry on a breakaway, but Syracuse drew even at 6:51 on a fortunate bounce around the crease. Michael Callahan’s shot from the point was initially stopped before the puck struck the back of Jansen Harkins’ leg and trickled across the line.
The Phantoms generated several chances on their first power play, with Carl Grundström, Jett Luchanko and Jack Studnicka applying pressure, but Rodrigue kept the score tied.
Bjarnason answered at the other end with a sprawling left-pad save during Syracuse’s first power play. A scramble around the crease prompted an extensive review, with officials confirming no goal on the play.
The Crunch eventually moved ahead at 18:41, just five seconds after the penalty expired. Former Phantom Elliot Desnoyers sent a backhand attempt toward the net that found its way past Bjarnason for a 2-1 lead.
Syracuse gained separation early in the middle frame.

After Murchison swept an initial opportunity away from the crease, Pelletier converted during the ensuing sequence for his first of three goals on the night. Gabriel Szturc followed with a top-shelf power-play goal moments later to make it 4-1.
Bjarnason continued to battle, extending his right toe to turn away Dylan Duke on another breakaway midway through the period, but Pelletier redirected a Nick Abruzzese shot at 17:26 and scored again with just 12 seconds remaining to complete his second-period hat trick.
Lehigh Valley found opportunities to respond in a contentious third period that featured repeated post-whistle scrums and a series of misconducts.
Studnicka poked a loose puck ahead while shorthanded and worked his way to the net, forcing Rodrigue to stop both his initial shot and a follow-up attempt.
Ciernik broke through at 7:37 after Nolan Foote capitalized on a Syracuse turnover in the offensive zone. Foote spotted Ciernik cutting through the slot, and the rookie delivered a quick shot past Rodrigue’s blocker for his milestone goal.
Desnoyers added his second goal of the evening on a late Syracuse power play to complete the scoring. The Crunch finished with a 28-23 advantage in shots, while Lehigh Valley went 0-for-2 on the power play and Syracuse finished 2-for-8.
The Phantoms are back in action at PPL Center tomorrow afternoon for a 3:05 p.m. showdown against the Belleville Senators as part of the team’s award-winning Phan Con, featuring a postgame skate with the Phantoms players presented by NJM Insurance.
