Bump in the Night!

Phantoms Sweep Road Trip

October 17, 2026

Springfield, MA – Alex Bump blasted home the overtime winner just 15 seconds into the extra period to lift the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (3-2-1) to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory at the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday night, completing a perfect three-game road trip and a weekend sweep of their Atlantic Division rivals.

Bump (6th, 7th) scored twice to extend his goal-scoring streak to five consecutive games, tying Adam Brooks for the third-longest streak in Lehigh Valley history. The 22-year-old Flyers prospect now leads the American Hockey League with seven goals in just five games since joining the Phantoms.

BOX SCORE

David Goyette (1st) scored his first goal as a Phantom while Aleksei Kolosov was sensational with 30 saves as Lehigh Valley rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win its third straight game.

The Phantoms entered the weekend winless through their first three games but have suddenly caught fire with victories at Hartford on Wednesday and back-to-back triumphs at Springfield.

And Saturday’s finale may have been the most impressive of the bunch.

Playing their third game in four nights, the Phantoms weathered an early Springfield onslaught, erased a two-goal deficit and survived a tense third period before Bump delivered the knockout punch.

Jacob Gaucher won both face-offs in overtime, including the decisive draw that eventually led to Bump receiving a feed in the high slot. The red-hot winger wasted little time unleashing a missile past Will Cranley at :15 to send the Phantoms pouring off the bench in celebration.

Bump’s overtime heroics capped a remarkable week in which he scored five goals and recorded six points across the three victories.

The Phantoms had to battle from behind for the first time this season after Springfield (2-2-2) opened the contest with seven consecutive shots on goal. Calle Rosen (1st) converted a rebound from a sharp angle at 2:36 to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead, marking the first time in six games Lehigh Valley had surrendered the opening goal.

Kolosov was outstanding in keeping the Phantoms within striking distance as Springfield outshot Lehigh Valley 15-11 in the opening frame.

The Thunderbirds doubled their advantage on the power play at 3:35 of the second period when Jakub Stancl hammered a one-timer from the right face-off circle for a 2-0 lead.

But the Phantoms weren’t going away.

Just 73 seconds later, Goyette broke free on a delayed penalty and delivered a dazzling breakaway finish, slipping a slick move past Cranley at 4:48 for his first goal in a Lehigh Valley uniform.

The Phantoms continued to push and eventually earned a brief five-on-three power play late in the second period. Bump made it count, cranking a shot from the point into the top corner to tie the game at 2-2.

The goal extended Bump’s goal streak to five consecutive games, matching Brooks’ run in March 2024. Only Petr Straka and Danick Martel, who each scored in six straight games, have recorded longer streaks in Lehigh Valley history.

The third period featured plenty of drama as both teams searched for the go-ahead goal.

Lehigh Valley thought it had taken the lead early in the frame when a net-front scramble sent the puck rolling across the goal line. But after the officials convened, the apparent goal was waved off.

Kolosov continued his stellar performance with several critical saves, including during a Springfield power play midway through the period.

At the other end, Cranley turned aside a dangerous Bump one-timer on a beautiful setup from Cole Knuble and later robbed Bump again on a low deflection of a Jackson Edward shot with just over four minutes remaining.

Neither team could break the deadlock in regulation, setting the stage for Bump’s dramatic overtime winner.

The victory completes a perfect 3-0-0 road trip for the Phantoms, who have now outscored their opponents 13-6 during their three-game winning streak. Lehigh Valley and Springfield finished even at 32 shots apiece.

The Phantoms return to PPL Center on Saturday, October 24 against the Syracuse Crunch and Sunday, October 25 against the Belleville Senators for Phan Con, featuring a Postgame Skate with the players presented by NJM Insurance.
