THE SKINNY:
The final stop on the cheesesteak tour was Campo’s Deli. Located on Market Street, like many steak shops in Philadelphia, it’s not far from its competition. Sonny’s Famous Steaks, which we sampled and enjoyed with goaltender Scott Munroe, is just a few doors down. Campo’s has a full menu of hoagies, salads and has eight different types of cheesesteaks. It’s a family owned business and goes back a few generations.

Now, on to the steaks.

Summary:

Rating (out of five):

Can you say mouthwatering roll? Among all the savory tastes and smells at Campo’s, that was the taste that I left with in my mouth. It was soft enough to have just come from right out of the belly of the oven. I ordered a cheesesteak with the works, so nestled into the sandwich along with the lean steak was a farm market of goodies, from onions to peppers to provolone cheese. It was delicious. There’s no such thing as the perfect cheesesteak (ya always gotta leave room for a little more tweaking), but this one is about as close to perfect as these icons of Philly gastronomy get. 4 ½.

Summary:

This was not my first time at Campo’s. Once, as a visitor to the city and staying in the Society Hill section, I happened across Campo’s. I then went back about a year ago. I must say, I remember a different cheesesteak, with the memory of the previous cheesesteaks outdistancing the one that I consumed on the tour. I recall a thicker sliced steak cut into one inch pieces and fluffed into the roll. This time it was the spatula-worked steak. With that said, it was good and I certainly enjoyed it. A nice way to finish the tour: good company and good eats. I’ll give Campo’s a 3 ½.

Summary:

Campo's had a really solid offering. It's cooked to order, but doesn't take too long to do so. It's a great mix of ingredients overall. I could have used a little bit of a larger sandwich, but what was there earns them a solid four golden hockey sticks.
