THE SKINNY:
Geno's Steaks was started by Joe Vento back in 1966. He figured that if he was going to sell a steak, he had to be where they were already eating them, and that’s at the intersection of 9th & Passyunk in South Philadelphia just across from Pat’s Steaks. The battle has been going on since then between the two, with Joe getting a lot of press for his outspoken nature. The whole, “Speak English when ordering” flap caught our attention, which was part of the reason we brought a Russian and a Latvian to lunch. As the story goes, Joe learned the cheese steak business from his father who in the early 1940's opened "Jim's Steaks". I n 1966, Joe started "Geno's" with $6.00 in his pocket, 2 boxes of steaks and some hot dogs.
You can come here literally anytime - the place is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Now, on to the steaks.
Oskars and Denis - American With
Rating (out of five):
Summary:
For both guys, it was their first true Philly cheese steak. They were prepped about ordering process since much has always been made about the time at the window and how you should know how to order without fail. And then you add in the “Speak English” deal…all that and they were walked though the menu like the rookies that they are. Both wolfed down the sandwich and used words like, “juicy”, “very good” and “tasty”. When asked to rate their first official Philly Cheese steaks they conferred and decided on a four.
Mike Thornton - American "with"
Rating (out of five):
Summary:
Considering we had already sampled his main competitor across the intersection, I was ready to be let down. But I must say that I enjoyed the cheese steak. Maybe it was the atmosphere? Seeing that we drew some media attention of our own that day, we were whisked inside to sit at the VIP table. For those who have never been or maybe did not realize, Geno’s has a booth inside the establishment. It’s in the popular orange motif. Pictures of all types of celebrities hang high and low. Caught my reflection in a few mirrors. What about the steak? It was slices of rib-eye laid on a solid roll with jest enough onions and cheese. The American melted just right by the time that I had unwrapped the sandwich. I give the steak three and a half golden hockey sticks. I would certainly stop at Geno’s for the late night steak. They are open 24 hours you know.
Brian Smith - Mushroom American with, plus onions and ketchup
Rating (out of five):
Summary:
Much like Mike, I was not expecting much from Geno's for two reasons - because Pat's was so bad, and because in general we hadn't had a good experience with slap-em-together steak places. But of those types of eateries, Geno's is tops. Despite pre-cooking everything and putting it together quickly, the steaks do manage to mix a bit and come out quite well. I give four golden hockey sticks to distinguish them from the others in this category.
