Guest Critic - John Stevens
John Stevens is heading into his second season as the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Stevens is an original member of the Phantoms, having joined the club as a defenseman in its inaugural year of 1996-97. He captained the team for its first three seasons, leading it to a Calder Cup championship in 1998. He moved behind the bench when his playing career ended in 1999 and took over as head coach in 2000, a post he held for six years. He led the Phantoms to their second Calder Cup championship in 2005. This past season, Stevens was inducted as the fourth member of the Phantoms Hall of Fame.
THE SKINNY:
Chickie's and Pete's original location has been in Northeast Philadelphia for many years, but they are also quickly becoming a South Philadelphia tradition. Located on the site of an old grocery store on Packer Avenue, just down the street from the Sports Complex, Chickie's and Pete's is immersed in the Philly sports scene. Teams often have parties there for their fans, and local television and radio stations can frequently be found broadcasting live from the location.
On to the steaks.

Summary:
Like Mike, I had not had a cheese steak at Chickie’s and Pete’s before this visit. Since I’ve been in Philly, the organization has always had functions at their Packer Ave. location and the food has always been excellent. The cheese steak followed suit. It was well prepared and the service was great. I’d give it four Golden Hockey Sticks. Tough to top on this visit, however, was the company. We all had the pleasure of eating with Jim Brown, his wife Genevive and son Breyton. Jim had recently returned back to the United States after serving in Afghanistan with the US Army for well over a year. Jim kept in touch throughout his deployment and also kept the Phantoms Platoon blog on the team website.
Mike Thornton - American "with"
Rating (out of five):
Summary:
Chickie’s and Pete’s was not a place that I originally considered as a cheese steak stop, but we were given the recommendation. I had been to Chickie’s many times before and sampled offerings in the chicken realm and pork. Their pork is good: has a nice kick to it. Of course, you can’t go to Chickie’s and not have their famous crabfries with cheese sauce. The cheese steak itself was mid-range. On a torpedo roll, the chopped beef was jammed in. The cheese was a bit unidentifiable. I’m not sure if it was melted American, their cheese sauce or what? You’re not really given a choice. Regardless, I thought it was tasty. I did, after all, chow it down without delay. I would have the sliced pork and of course the cheese fries. I would give the Chickie’s cheese steak three Golden Hockey Sticks.

Summary:
Chickie's and Pete's is not the place that jumps to the mind of most when thinking of a place to go for a cheesesteak. It's certainly the place to go for a drink after work, to catch the game or just hang out with friends. That being said, I was surprised at how much I liked their cheesesteak, especially upon seeing it listed on the menu as "Steak Sandwich with Cheese." That's something I've seen on menus when I was working in hockey out in Michigan, and saying those words to a server in Michigan usually preceded a very bad lunch experience involving a solid piece of meat, lettuce, mayonnaise and sometimes some water chestnuts. But this sandwich was good. It wasn't your typical Philly cheesesteak necessarily - it seemed to be on the type of roll you'd have a meatball sandwich on, and the beef wasn't quite as chopped as most places. But if you're going there for the crab fries and all the other great things Chickie's has to offer, it's certainly worth your trouble. Friday, July 20, 2007
