BOUCHER BLANKS RATS
Phantoms Take 3-0 Win Over Albany
PHILADELPHIA - Brian Boucher made 37 saves to record his first shutout of the season and third consecutive win as the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Albany River Rats 3-0 on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum.
The Phantoms found a bit of luck to start the scoring at 9:01 of the first period. Jonathan Matsumoto was carrying a puck down the right side surrounded by River Rats, but was able to turn the corner and just threw a puck into the slot. There were no Phantoms present, but the skate of Albany defenseman Tim Conboy was. It hit that skate and went past River Rats goaltender Michael Leighton, giving Philadelphia the 1-0 lead.
Ryan Potulny gave the Phantoms a 2-0 lead at 3:52 of the second period. Pete Zingoni was in the left corner and found Potulny alone between the circles, and the winger beat Leighton clean to the stick side.
The Phantoms power play, which has been red-hot early this season, continued its solid play with a goal in the third period. It was Jared Ross capitalizing this time, swatting a puck out of midair from the right post and beating Leighton at 12:37.
With just over four minutes to play, the teams engaged in a line brawl that resulted in four ejections on each side and a total of 142 penalty minutes.
The Phantoms head to Wilkes-Barre to take on the Penguins in their first road game of the season Saturday night, and then will come back to finish the home-and-home series against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday with a 6:05 tilt at the Wachovia Spectrum. The Phantoms will be honoring the Phantoms Platoon, which returned home this summer after a 16-month deployment to Afghanistan. Tickets are available at the Wachovia Complex box office, online at ComcastTIX.com or phantomshockey.com, or by phone at 1-800-298-4200.
