Tye McGinn Buries Late Game-Winner

February 28, 2014

Tye McGinn scored twice for the Adirondack Phantoms including the game-winner with just 2:58 remaining in a 3-2 victory at the Utica Comets on Friday night. McGinn's 15th and 16th of the year led the way for the Phantoms' first-ever visit to Memorial Auditorium and Rob Bordson added his 10th of the year. Yann Danis put forth a solid 27-save effort for the win.

Yann Danis turned in an impressive 27-save effort in the win as Adirondack got back on the winning track with the quality road-victory. Joakim Ericksson took the loss for Utica while David Marshall and Benn Ferriero scored the team's goals.

McGinn record his second multi-goal game of the season and his first since January 26 versus Hartford while the Phantoms improved to a 2-0-0 record against the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.

Adirondack never trailed. Tye McGinn opened the scoring 8:13 into the game with a rebound opportunity following a Brandon Manning shot from the point right off a face-off win by Chris VandeVelde. The Phantoms led 1-0 at the first break.

David Marshall evened the score for Utica less than five minutes into the second frame when his attempted centering-pass during a 2-on-1 would be blocked back to him off the skate of Adirondack's Steven Delisle. On his second bite at the apple he decided to shoot instead of pass and was able to convert for his first goal of the season.

Matt Mangene came tantalizingly close to giving the Phantoms the lead at the end of the second period but his back-door effort was thwarted on a spectacular sliding kick-save to the right by Joakim Ericksson.

The Phantoms would take the lead early in the third-person on a Rob Bordson intercept. Driving to the left-dot, Bordson wristed his 10th of the season putting Adirondack back out in front now at 2-1.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Benn Ferriero sped through the Phantoms defense to accept a feed from the right-wing boards by Cal O'Reilly. Utica's quick entry leading to Ferriero's backhand chip point-blank on Danis would tie the game again at 2-2 with 9:24 remaining on their power-play goal.

Chris VandeVelde had a smart intercept and push forward at center to set up the game-winner. With the steal at the red-line, he saw Akeson potentially open up the right-wing and nudged a one-hand chip forward for Akeson to get moving. Akeson's 31st assist of the season was a nice stop-and-stutter move to induce the Comets' defenseman to bite thus allowing his give to the middle for Tye McGinn for the game-winner. McGinn buried his second of the game and 16th of the year.

After the game, it was announced by the Philadelphia Flyers that goaltender Cal Heeter has been recalled on an emergency basis. Heeter will join the Flyers for their Saturday afternoon game against the New York Rangers taking the place of Ray Emery who is described as "day-to-day" with an unspecified lower-body injury.

Utica out-shot Adirondack 29-23. The Comets were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Phantoms were 0 for 2. The Phantoms will return to Utica on March 21 and the Comets will close out the season-series with their sojourn to Glens Falls on April 13.

The Phantoms continue their 3-in-3 weekend on Saturday night at the Syracuse Crunch at 7:00.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
