Admirals Split Series with Phantoms

December 22, 2013

The Norfolk Admirals scored twice in the second period and tacked on another in the third to salvage a split of their weekend series with the Adirondack Phantoms at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals won the Saturday finale 3-1 to end their four-game losing streak and send the Phantoms to only their second loss in their last six games.

Jason Akeson scored in the third period to cut the Admirals' lead to 2-1 and Adirondack had a huge opportunity late in the game with a power play and a pulled goalie for the last two minutes of the contest. But the Phantoms could not convert on their 6-on-4 opportunity and then veteran Nolan Yonkman's long clear from deep in the Norfolk zone found the back of the empty-net to seal the victory.

The game featured three fights in the relatively chippy rematch. Steven Delisle entered the lineup for the first time in two months and made the most of his opportunity. He blasted a big slapper off the pipe just a couple minutes into the game. And later in the period dropped the gloves with John Kurtz and convincingly won his bout with several solid blows. Nick Cousins also had his first pro fight going with fellow 5'11" rookie Charlie Sarault in the third period. Derek Mathers also engaged in a fight back in the first period matching up against tough guy Zack Stortini.

Cal Heeter in his eighth consecutive start took the loss for Adirondack while backup goalie Igor Bobkov battled through a shaky beginning to record the win and almost land the shutout.

Norfolk rookie Charlie Sarault scored on the back-door via a cross-ice pass from Max Frieberg in the second period to open the scoring for the Admirals. And 2010 first-round selection Emerson Etem was aided by a Norfolk intercept and converted on his breakaway a few minutes later.

The Phantoms struck with 13:41 remaining when Akeson buried the rebound of a Cullen Eddy slapshot from the right circle. But the Phantoms weren't able to seriously threaten in their pivotal 6-on-4 opportunity at the end of the game. Adirondack was only able to come up with one goal against big Russian netminder Igor Bobkov just 24 hours after scoring a season-high five goals against rookie talent John Gibson.

Kris Newbury reached the 700 Game Milestone for his pro career as the Phantoms reached the holiday break at 13-12-2. Norfolk improved their record to 14-11-5.

Norfolk outshot the Phantoms 35-29. Adirondack was 0-for-3 on the power play while Norfolk went 1-for-5.

The weekend represented Adirondack's lone visit to Norfolk this season. The Admirals have one more game in Glens Falls this year but not until April.

The players officially began their Christmas Break after the game and then the Phantoms return to action on Thursday and Friday next week on the road at Springfield and Albany.
The Phantoms next home games are Saturday, December 28 against the Providence Bruince on Youth T-Shirt Night and Tuesday, December 31 against the Worcester Sharks for the traditional New Year's Eve Game in Glens Falls.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
