Akeson 100th Phantoms Point
March 29, 2013

Jason Akeson became the first player to reach 100 points with the Adirondack Phantoms when he blasted his team-leading 15th goal of the season in the second period, but Adirondack lost on the road to the Binghamton Senators 5-2 on Friday night.

Binghamton raced out to a 4-0 lead by the opening minutes of the second period and the Phantoms weren't able to recover. Adirondack helped open the game up when they got down in the game and had several chances to narrow the margin in the wild and exciting second period but only the Akeson tally would get past Nathan Lawson in that frame.

Eric Wellwood also scored for the Phantoms, on a power play early in the third period, for his ninth of the year. Adirondack had closed the lead to 4-2 but Derek Grant's goal about seven minutes into the third would dim the Phantoms' hopes of a comeback.

The game ends the Phantoms' two-game winning streak. Adirondack had also won three of their last four before this loss. The Phantoms have played eight of their last nine games on the road as they hit the home-stretch of the regular season in which they have eight of their last 10 contests on Glens Falls ice.

Akeson took over the all-time Adirondack Phantoms' point-lead last Saturday when he passed Denis Hamel. Now he becomes the first-ever to reach 100 points entirely with the Adirondack Phantoms. Current Phantoms Danny Syvret and David Laliberte are already in the Phantoms-Franchise 100-Point Club but that also includes points with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2008-09.

Akeson is the 21st ever player to reach 100 points in a career in the 17-year history of the Phantoms Franchise which began in 1996-97.

Cole Schneider led the way for Binghamton with a three-point night on two goals and one assist. He scored consecutive goals about a minute apart in the first period beginning with a penalty shot when he was tripped up from behind by Matt Konan on a breakaway. His stick would break on the penalty shot but the drive still ad enough on it to sneak past Cal Heeter in the Phantoms net for the 1-0 lead.

A minute later, he trailed on an odd-man rush and was hanging out in the slot when Binghamton quickly won the puck on the end-boards and he blasted it home past the left-skate of Heeter and off the inside of the post to make it 2-0. Schneider had a few tries for the hat trick including a wide-open net in the third period when he rang a shot off the far post from the right side of the crease.

Pat Cannone converted on the back-door on a quick-moving 3-on-1 in the second period to make it 3-0. And then Mark Borowiecki would rush up to the slot from his defensive position about two minutes later as Binghamton took a 4-0 advantage.

Adirondack had the better of the play and chances for much of the second period after that but had difficulty getting enough past Lawson.

Binghamton outshot Adirondack 40-39 in the game. The Phantoms are 3-4-0 against Binghamton this season and finished 2-2-0 in this building. Adirondack was 2-for-5 on the power-play while Binghamton was held to 0-for-6.

The Phantoms were without three players who were all recently called up to the Philadelphia Flyers this week; Tye McGinn, Erik Gustafsson and Oliver Lauridsen. McGinn and Gustafsson have both played in the NHL before. For Lauridsen, Saturday at 1:00 against the Boston Bruins could mark his NHL debut.

Brandon Manning returned to the lineup after missing the last four games with injury. And Cullen Eddy was back after missing two games last weekend. Rob Bordson also returned to game-action after leaving last Sunday following a slapshot to his face that thankfully had to go through his visor before contacting his eye. Zack FitzGerald was a healthy scratch for Adirondack.

The Phantoms have 10 games remaining in the regular season with eight of them coming on home-ice. Adirondack hosts the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday at 7:00 on Phantoms Poster Night presented by Glens Falls Printing. A team-autograph session in Heritage Hall will follow the game. The Saratoga Blue Streaks state championship high school hockey team will be honored at the game as well. Call the Phantoms for tickets at 518-480-3355.
