The Adirondack Phantoms have announced that RW
Derek Mathers has joined the team on an Amateur
Tryout Contract (ATO).
Mathers (May-thurs), 19, comes to the Phantoms
for the finish of the AHL season just like he
did last year . His Major Juniors team has reached
the end of their season thus he is eligible to
sign the late-season ATO with the Phantoms.
He was a seventh-round selection of the Flyers
in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and has participated
in the past couple of Philadelphia Flyers Prospect
Camps held in Voorhees, NJ in July.
The 6'3" and 225-pound tough-guy had 10 goals
and 19 assists in 64 games this season with the
Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League
while accumulating 125 penalty minutes. That was
down from the 177 penalty minutes he had there
the prior season before the OHL implemented rules
to limit fighting.
He joined Adirondack late last season and played
in nine games scoring zero points while garnering
26 penalty minutes. On April 14, 2012 against
the Worcester Sharks he dropped the gloves with
Mike Moore in a big tilt that drew roars from
the crowd at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
