Time and Tye McGinn...Again!
Tye McGinn is certainly having a successful stay
up ni the NHL with the Flyers. He has scored goals
in back-to-back games this week on Monday and
Tuesday nights at Toronto and Winnipeg. And it
Tuesday's game he also got in another impressive
scrap. Check it out here:
Transactions
Veteran goalie Brian Boucher was recalled by the
Philadelphia Flyers this week. His call-up on
Saturday was the result of an injury to Michael
Leighton. Cal Heeter was summoned from Trenton
to take his place on the roster with the Phantoms
but, of course, had been with the Phantoms for
most of the season.
Harry Zolnierczyk was recalled by the Philadelphia
Flyers on Tuesday and played his first NHL game
of the season that night at Winnipeg. "Harry
Z" played in 37 games with the Flyers last
year and had three goals. This season with Adirondack
he has nine goals and eight assists.
Robin Lehner and Brian Boucher engaged in an impressive
goalie-duel in a battle of youth vs. experience.
The 21-year-old Senators' prospect, Lehner, won
out over the 36-year-old veteran Boucher.
It was really a 1-0 game that Binghamton was finally
able to put away late with a power play goal at
the end followed by a long empty-netter. For the
duration of the third period, the Phantoms kept
charging at Lehner and challenging the Swedish
netminder only be turned away each time they tried
to even the score.
Early in the second period with the score still
0-0 came a quick two-goal swing. Rob Bordson would
be denied point-blank on his chance to give Adirondack
the first goal and then the speedy Binghamton
team rushed back the other and Corey Cowick converted
in front to make it 1-0 for the Senators instead.
Boucher was terrific in allowing just the two
goals all game and keeping the Phantoms in the
game. Similarly, Robin Lehner showed why he is
considered perhaps the top goalie in the AHL with
his 29-save shutout to improve his league-leading
saves percentage to almost .950.
Zack FitzGerald had a terrific game despite the
losing final score at Syracuse. The well-known
and immensely-popular tough guy engaged in two
fights with Eric Nielson AND also scored his first
goal of the season on a breakaway. For "Fitzy"
it was just his 11th career goal in 8 AHL seasons.
David Laliberte scored on a breakaway as well,
shortly after FitzGerald's second fight, and the
Phantoms rallied from a 2-0 deficit to the the
game at 2-2. Adirondack played extremely well
in the second period in their comeback and seemed
to rally off the spark provided by FitzGerald's
bout.
But with 11 minutes remaining in the third period,
Rickard Panik would have a friendly bounce of
a blocked shot come right back to his stick to
convert on his team-leading 21st goal of the season.
And a sharp-angle deflection late by Brett Connolly
would conclude the scoring.
Adirondack enjoyed their largest margin of victory
this season as 5 different players scored 6 goals
which included 3 defensemen getting into the act.
David Laliberte led the way with his 9th career
AHL multi-goal game and his 1st in Glens Falls.
Matt Mangene, Jeff Dimmen, Cullen Eddy and Erik
Gustafsson all scored too.
Scott Munroe had the best performance of the game
though with 42 saves as he fell just 1:22 shy
of his second shutout of the season before Tyler
Johnson would finally get Syracuse on the board
with a late power-play goal.
In the first period, Munroe had to dive across
on a rebound that squirted over to the other side
and somehow he was able to lay his stick out and
deny Syracuse captain Mike Angeledis on the back-door
to keep the Phantoms ahead 1-0 at the time.
Jason Akeson weaved and circled and dangled around
three different Syracuse defenders with an amazing
series of moves to set up Laliberte on the back-door
for the team's last goal of the game and perhaps
the most impressive.
Adirondack finished the season series vs. Syracuse
with a 4-4-0 record.
Saratoga Spine Phantoms Player of the
Week - David Laliberte
David Laliberte is the Saratoga Spine Player of
the Week.
With his parents in the stands cheering him on,
the Quebec native scored two goals Sunday to lead
the attack in the Phantoms' 6-1 win. And he also
had a goal on Friday night on the road to make
it a three-goal weekend.
Laliberte rejoined the Phantoms in January after
recovering from a knee injury suffered last season
in Europe. Laliberte is one of the original Adirondack
Phantoms and scored 18 goals in 2009-10 before
being traded early the next season. He also played
in 11 NHL games that year and scored in his NHL
debut against Michael Leighton who was with Carolina
at the time. Laliberte had a career-high 28 goals
in 2008-09 for the Philadelphia Phantoms.
The 26-year-old Laliberte says he is extremely
happy to be back with the Phantoms and the Flyers
organization and looks forward to trying to make
it back to the NHL.
