The Adirondack Phantoms
completed their preseason schedule with another
closed-session exhibition game, this time against
the Connecticut Whale. The Saturday evening game
was played inside the New York Rangers training
facility in Tarrytown, NY. Connecticut broke a
late 1-1 tie with a goal by Chad Kolarik with
34.3 seconds remaining and the Whale added an
empty-netter to pull out the 3-1 win.
Brayden Schenn scored for the Phantoms and came
very close to another on a few different occasions.
In fact, he thought he had broken a 1-1 tie late
in the third and was in mid-celebration with arms
raised after thinking he had jammed it in. But
the goal-light had not come on and none of the
officials believed it had gone it. Schenn had
several other tries in the game too and showed
some of the best energy on the ice.
Then with two minutes left in the third period,
he almost broke the late deadlock again when his
flip across the slot to Eric Wellwood on a 2-on-1
just missed the mark.
Schenn's goal in the middle of the second period
came on an extended power play attack in the Connecticut
zone in which the Phantoms kept coming and coming
with try after try. It was fed to him in the high
slot where he teed-up his drive and roofed home
his nice goal. Erik Gustafsson and Sean Couturier
assisted on the tally. Couturier's feed came from
the right-wall
Scott Munroe played in net for Adirondack and
was solid throughout making a couple of very nice
saves. But, for the most part, Adirondack appeared
to have the better of the play and kept the puck
in the Connecticut zone especially in the first
and second periods.
Shots on goal in the first period favored the
Phantoms 8-2 leading to a scoreless deadlock after
20 minutes. A wild and back-and-forth second period
saw both teams score goals as the Phantoms outshot
the Whale 18-12. Connecticut came on strong in
the third and Munroe made some very nice saves
to keep the game deadlocked.
Munroe even denied J.T. Miller on a penalty shot
with 6:35 left.
The game was played in front of team officials
only and was not open to the public.
The Phantoms lineup included 3 Marc-Andre Bourdon,
5 Danny Syvret, 9 Rob Bordson, 10 Brayden Schenn,
13 Zack Fitzgerald, 14 Sean Couturier, 15 Andrew
Johnston, 16 Tye McGinn, 20 Cullen Eddy, 22 Eric
Wellwood, 24 Harry Zolnierczyk, 25 Matt Ford,
