Force with the Phantoms on Star Wars Night

March 24, 2012

On Star Wars Night at the Glens Falls Civic Center, the Adirondack Phantoms turned away the Springfield Falcons 3-1 for a key victory in the ever-tightening Eastern Conference race.

Michael Leighton came within seven minutes of his second consecutive shutout and Adirondack received goals from Rob Bordson (2nd), Brandon Manning (6th) and Matt Ford (22nd) as they stayed unbeaten all-time against Springfield at 7-0-0.

Leighton turned aside 24 of 25 Springfield shots for the win but was broken late in the game by nick Drazenovic off the underside of the crossbar for the lone Falcons' tally of the night.

Birthday-boy Oliver Lauridsen appeared to have scored his fourth of the season while celebrating his 23rd birthday in the game. But after the game was over the ruling on the goal was changed to a tip-in by Rob Bordson on the shot past Paul Dainton. Bordson's second of the year assisted by Lauridsen and Shane Harper gave Adirondack a 1-0 lead that would hold up until the third period. It was the second game in a row in which the Phantoms were clinging to a 1-0 advantage until the final frame.

But this time the Phantoms would stake Leighton with a bit more breathing room with back-to-back goals just a couple minutes apart to begin the third.

Brandon Manning took a nice drop from the corner by Mike Testwuide and blasted home his sixth of the season to make it 2-0. Dainton was never able to see the puck as Ben Holmstrom got in the slot to screen the rookie goalie's view.

Just a couple minutes later, Dan Jancevski would feed the puck from the point to Matt Ford in the slot to rifle home his 22nd overall on the year and his 12th since joining the Phantoms in early February when he came over from the Hershey Bears in a trade for Kevin Marshall.

Springfield never put together many serious challenges at the Adirondack goal as the defensive unit put the clams down on Alexandre Giroux and Dane Byers and the rest of the Falcons' offense.

The win pulls Adirondack one point closer in the conference race. At 32-21-3 for 67 points, the Phantoms trail Manchester and Syracuse by four points for the 7th and 8th spots. Both of those teams have 71 points. Adirondack has one game-in-hand on the Monarchs and the Crunch.

The Phantoms are also now just one point behind Springfield in the jumbled standings and are in an amazing 5-way tie for 10th place at 67 points with Albany, Worcester, Portland and Providence. 10 games remain in the regular season for the Phantoms with every point proving to be vitally crucial through the stretch run.

The game featured several costumed characters from the Star Wars series courtesy of the 501st Garrison unit of upstate NY.

Before the game, a special check presentation was made to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital for over $13,000. Thanks to all the great fans who helped support the worthy cause on Pink in the Rink Night in January including the special tickets sold, Pink in the Rink T-Shirts, Pink Jersey Auction, and 50/50 raffle.

The Phantoms are now 19-12-1 at home this year and are 3-0 this season against Springfield. The Phantoms and Falcons meet one more time in Adirondack's last away game of the season with big playoff implications potentially on the line on Friday, April 13th in western Mass.

Adirondack was without Erik Gustafsson in the game who was called up earlier in the day and played that evening with Philadelphia. He was replaced in the lineup by Cullen Eddy.

Tyler Brown returned to the lineup after missing Friday's game with injury.

Scratches for the Phantoms included Blake Kessel, Garrett Klotz, Tye McGinn and Oskars Bartulis.

Adirondack outshot the Falcons 31-25. The Phantoms went 0-for-4 on the power play while Springfield was 0-for-1.

Adirondack aims for a perfect three-in-three weekend on Sunday afternoon against the Binghamton Senators at 3:00 as they look to pull even closer in the chase for a post-season birth.

Sunday's game is Mascot Mania to celebrate Dax's birthday and also includes a post-game open-skate with the Phantoms players courtesy of Glens Falls Hospital.
