24 hours after the Phantoms terrific comeback
in the Outdoor Classic, the Hershey Bears exacted
their amount of revenge with a 5-2 victory at
Giant Center to earn a split of the weekend series.
It was Hershey's first win against Adirondack
in three tries this season.
The game was tied 2-2 after two periods with both
teams battling it out back and forth. But Hershey
would score three goals in the opening 10 minutes
of the final period to put the game away.
Andrew Rowe (2nd) and Tyler Brown (3rd) and scored
in the first and second periods respectively for
the Phantoms. Rowe's goal came from behind the
net as he centered it out in front intending to
hit Tom Sestito barging into the slot. But instead,
the puck hit off the skate of a defenseman and
into the cage.
With 3:30 remaining in regulation, a Tyler Brown
collision with Hershey's Joel Rechlicz sparked
a line-brawl at the Adirondack bench that involved
Rechlicz throwing a punch at Tom Sestito who was
standing at the bench. Sestito and Lauridsen among
other reached and grabbed at Hershey players who
got involved at the bench in the wild melee.
Keith Aucoin led the Bears offensive attack dishing
out three assists to he teammates running his
league-leading total to 50 in his pursuit of the
AHL's all-time single season helper record of
89.
Hershey received goals from Chris Bourque on a
shorthanded rush, Boyd Kane in the second period,
and then three straight in the third from Jacob
Micflicker, Julien Brouilette and Patrick McNeil.
The Phantoms outshot the Bears 30-29. Adirondack
was 0-for-4 on the power play while Hershey went
1-for-5. Michael Leighton took the loss for the
Phantoms while Dany Sabourin was the victorious
goaltender for the Bears.
One more game in the season series between these
long-time rivals remain. The Phantoms return to
Hershey on March 14. With the win, the Bears take
the lead in the all-time series after 173 total
games with 83 wins to the Phantoms 82 (with 8
ties).
