The Phantoms have announced
that goaltender Michael Leighton has been assigned
to Adirondack according to Philadelphia Flyers General
Manager Paul Holmgren.
Leighton, 30, returns for his second season with
the Phantoms. He appeared in 30 games with Adirondack
last season going 14-12-3, with a 2.22 goals-against
average and .926 save percentage and five shutouts.
His dazzling stops helped serve as a driving force
behind the Phantoms’ second-half resurgence
in 2010-11.
Especially strong down the stretch, Leighton posted
back-to-back shutouts in his final two starts of
the season earning a return to the Flyers for postseason
play. Leighton appeared for Philadelphia in the
postseason for the second consecutive season, a
year after he guided the club to its first Stanley
Cup Final since 1997 (eighth all time), by going
8-3. His Stanley Cup Final run included three shutouts
of Montreal in the Eastern Conference Final.
He has 34 career shutouts in the AHL which is the
most of any goalie since 1975 and rates sixth all-time.
Leighton has played in 104 career NHL games and
294 AHL games. In his AHL career he has 144 total
victories, a 2.30 goals against average and a .917
saves percentage. He set the all-time record league
with 98 saves in a game in April, 2008 as an All-Star
member of the Albany River Rats in their historic
five overtime game against the Philadelphia Phantoms.
Originally a native of Petrolia, Ontario, this will
be Leighton’s third season in his second stint
in the Flyers organization. Leighton has also spent
time in the Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators
and Chicago Blackhawks organizations.
Welcome Back, Leights!
