Adirondack Phantoms
July 8
Today was the day that I had been looking forward
to all week long; Trial on the Isle. Players such
as Tom Sestito, Zac Rinaldo and Eric Wellwood, amongst
others, talked about how badly they wanted to win.
Mike Testwuide was looking to defend the title he
won in 2010 alongside Jeff Carter and Michael Banwell.
The 2011 Flyers Prospects arrived at the Stone
Harbor Fire House around 9 a.m. Fans stormed the
streets in Stone Harbor early in the orange and
black to cheer on the Flyers prospects. As the group
filed off the bus, Flyers Strength and Conditioning
Coach Jim McCrossin gathered the group of bikers
and discussed the route in which the guys would
go to get to their partners waiting on the paddleboards.
Some of the bikers included Luke Pither, Erik Gustafsson
and Marc-Andre Bourdon. The festivities began at
exactly 10 a.m. when Stone Harbor Mayor Susan Walters
yelled into the megaphone, “Ready, Set and
Go!”
Media dispersed quickly to follow the group. The
hot and humid day in Stone Harbor had even those
not in the race sweating. In the end, Marcel Noebels
(bike), Kevin Marshall (paddleboard) and Kyle Mountain
(run) won the 2011 Trial on the Isle.
After Trail on the Isle, the event moved to the
Stone Harbor Elementary School. Players led local
kids in a Hooked on Hockey clinic in the parking
lot. Fans then waited in line for hours outside
the school to see their Flyers prospect and get
some autographs.
The last event of the day had the Flyers prospects
in a charity softball game against the Stone Harbor
Stars, at the 80th Street baseball field. The Flyers
prospects were looking to avenge last year’s
loss to the Stars. Philadelphia Flyers Public Address
Announcer Lou Nolan emceed the game. Fans filled
the stands and around the dugouts to see cheer on
their team.
Saturday is the first day of scrimmages at the
SkateZone for the 2011 Flyers Prospects. The scrimmage
begins at 9 a.m. and will wrap up around 12:15 p.m.
