Adirondack Phantoms
July 6
The First Day of the 2011 Flyers Prospect Camp
from the SkateZone in Voorhees, NJ is complete.
40 players are scheduled to attend the five-day
camp, which includes 23 forwards, 12 defensemen
and 5 goaltenders.
Before the camp began, I got a chance to walk around
the facility and see what the SkateZone had to offer.
The complex recently installed the Bauer Hockey
Training Center where players can improve on their
mechanics on the ice. It is a state-of-the art synthetic
ice skating treadmill where a coach can work with
their player one-on-one (videotape analysis included)
to help enhance an individual’s power, speed
& endurance along with stick handling and shooting
while skating. It is a great way for hockey players
to make the next step in their career.
The first session got underway around 9 a.m. with
current Phantoms players Mike Testwuide, Zac Rinaldo,
Kevin Marshall and Oliver Lauridsen along with the
recently acquired, Brayden Schenn. There was much
excitement from the estimated crowd of around 250
to get a first look at the coveted center, Brayden
Schenn. Fans were buzzing about the latest addition
and snapping photos whenever the time was made possible.
The second session started around 10:45 am with
each of the practices being held on the Flyers Rink
at the Virtua Center. There was some confusion from
the media and fans as to where the second session
was to begin. Swarms of individuals went from the
Flyers rink to the Phantoms rink (and vise versa)
multiple times and honestly was quite amusing. Forwards
Matt Read, Eric Wellwood, Ben Holmstrom along with
defenseman Erik Gustafsson made up part of the second
session. Sean Couturier, the Flyers 1st Round Pick
in the 2011 Draft, made his debut as well as the
rest of their 2011 picks (Nick Cousins, Colin Suellentrop,
Marcel Noebels, Petr Placek and Derek Mathers).
Forwards were wearing white while defensemen were
in black.
Adirondack Phantoms assistant coaches Riley Cote
and Kjell Samuelsson along with Derian Hatcher,
Ian Laparierre and Jeff Reese ran the camp. The
coaches ran the group through a series of drills
including sprints, passing, puck control and an
intense game in front of the goaltender to gain
control of the puck over their opponent.
Listed below are players that are at the 2011 Flyers
Prospect Camp and were with the Phantoms during
the 2010-11 season:
-Forwards: Shane Harper, Tye McGinn, Luke Pither,
Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo, Andrew Rowe, Tom Sestito,
Mike Testwuide, Eric Wellwood and Harry Zolniercyzk
-Defensemen: Marc-Andre Bourdon, Erik Gustafsson,
Tyler Hostetter, Oliver Lauridsen and Kevin Marshall
On-ice workouts continue on Thursday, July 7 at
9 a.m. and following the camp, there will be a public
skating session from 12:30 to 3 PM. Selected players
will be on the ice with fans at various times throughout
the session.
On Friday, July 8, the camp shifts to Stone Harbor,
NJ for the annual Trial on the Isle. The daylong
event includes a 10 AM mini-triathlon competition
that includes a bike ride from the corner of 96th
Street and 2nd Avenue to the Yacht Club beginning
at 10 a.m. Following the bike ride, they will take
off in a paddleboat obstacle course at Snug Harbor
Basin (89th and Sunset Ave). The last stretch of
the race includes a run from 87th Street, over the
dunes to the finish line at 96th Street.
The reigning champion from last year, Mike Testwuide,
says he is looking forward to proudly defending
the title, “I like paddling. I am not a big
runner. I would not mind the bike but the bike is
tough to grab the lead. I feel like the paddling
is where the lead is taken.”
The event is followed by a Hooked on Hockey youth
clinic, an autograph session and a charity softball
game at 4 p.m.
