The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have called up defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Adirondack Phantoms according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.
This will be the third NHL call-up for Gustafsson this season. He made his NHL debut on February 26 in Ottawa logging over 16 minutes of ice-time against the Senators. In his first call-up to the NHL on December 29, Gustafsson spent five days with the Flyers before being returned to Adirondack on January 3, but did not appear in any of the three games the Flyers played while he was on the roster.
The move comes after the Flyers announced that defenseman Chris Pronger will undergo hand surgery.
"We’re going to call up Eric Gustafsson. I’m not sure he’ll be available for the game," Holmgren said via conference call with the media. "But just the fact that we’re on the road, if we run into a problem, it’s a lot easier to have a defenseman with us than trying to get somebody into Atlanta or Dallas last-minute. So we’re bringing a guy up, Eric Gustafsson, just to kind of cover ourselves.”
Gustafsson, 22 (12-15-88), was signed by the Flyers as a free agent on March 3, 2010. He has 5 goals and 31 assists this season for 36 points. He leads the Phantoms in assists and also is first among all AHL rookies. His 36 points is tops among all rookie blue-liners in the league.
Gustafsson represented the Adirondack Phantoms at the AHL All-Star Classic in Hershey on January 31st. In the skills competition on January 30th he won the puck-handling contest helping the Eastern Conference to a 19-7 win. And then in the All-Star Game the next night, he contributed two assists and was +3 in helping the Eastern Conference to an 11-8 victory over the Western Conference.
A native of Kvissleby, Sweden, Gustafsson joined the Phantoms for five games last season following the end of a three-year career at Northern Michigan University. He scored two goals and added five assists for seven points in those five games. Over three seasons at Northern Michigan, Gustafsson posted seven goals and 86 assists for 93 points in 123 games.
