Glens Falls, NY-On Black
Out Night at the Glens Falls Civic Center, Greg
Moore (7th) scored in regulation for Adirondack
and then notched the game-winner in the shootout
to lead the Phantoms to a thrilling 2-1 shootout
victory over the Worcester Sharks Saturday night.
Adirondack has now recorded points in eight of the
last nine games (4-1-4).
It marked the fourth time in the last five games
that Adirondack went to a shootout to decide a winner.
The Phantoms improved to 4-6 in the shootout.
Michael Leighton turned in a dazzling performance
and finished the game with 38 saves and stopped
five of six Sharks shooters in the shootout to earn
his fifth victory of the season.
Adirondack opened the scoring 1:59 into the second
period. As Danny Syvret drove to the crease, Greg
Moore threw one towards the net and snuck it five-hole
past a screened Sharks goaltender Daren Machesney
to give Adirondack a 1-0 lead.
It was Moore's first goal since January 21 against
Wilkes-Barre Scranton in Philadelphia.
Worcester tied the game at 1-1 on Jamie McGinn's
11th goal of the season blasting a one-timer from
the high slot on the power play.
The second period featured some wild back-and-forth
transition and several odd-man rushes each way with
Worcester eventually outshooting Adirondack 18-14
in the frame.
Both teams would get more great chances in the
exciting third period and onto a wild overtime.
The Sharks outshot the Phantoms 5-3 in the overtime
but Adirondack also had a pair of chances out in
front on steals that were blasted wide.
Ben Holmstrom would tie up the shootout at 1-1
in the 4th round with a forehand to backhand move
after getting the goalie to commit going down. Greg
Moore pulled a similar forehand to backhand move
in the 6th round for the game-winner but the righty
shooter flipped it upstairs from the left-wing side
of the crease.
Michael Leighton snagged Tommy Wingels wrister
in his glove to close out the 6th round and demonstrated
an emotional celebration with his Phantoms teammates
after throwing the puck out to the center of the
ice.
A post-game jersey auction for the Phantoms game-worn
blacks followed the exciting contest hosted by P.A.
Announcer Dan Miner. Michael Leighton offered his
game-used stick along with his black jersey and
the combo fetched an impressive $700 bid for the
winner. Kevin Marshall's jersey went for $525 and
several other players had their jerseys taken right
off their backs with impressive bids.
It was the first game of the season between the
Phantoms and the Sharks and it was Worcester's only
appearance to Glens Falls. In their last 30 games,
Adirondack is 15-8-7 and under Head Coach Joe Paterson
are 13-8-7.
Phantoms Notes: Defensemen Marc Andre-Bourdon and
Matt Walker were scratches for Adirondack. Defenseman
Erik Gustafsson, who was recalled by the Flyers
yesterday, appeared in his first NHL game tonight
in Ottawa. Gustafsson logged 16:06 of ice-time while
recording 4 penalty minutes in his debut.
