Norfolk, VA- The Adirondack
Phantoms wrapped up their three game road-swing
with a 3-1 loss to the Norfolk Admirals Saturday
night at Norfolk Scope Arena. David Laliberte gave
the Phantoms the early 1-0 lead on the power play
in the first period but Adirondack was unable to
solve Admirals netminder Dustin Tokarski after that.
Norfolk avenged their overtime loss at Glens Falls
last week to even the season series at one game
apiece. Nic Riopel took the loss in his second start
of the week for the Phantoms after being called
up from Greenville (SC) of the ECHL.
Alex Berry lit the lamp twice for the Admirals
to earn #1 Star of the Game honors tying the game
in the first period and then scoring the eventual
game-winner late in the second frame. Former Albany
River Rat Mike Angeledis scored from the left-wing
circle early in the third period to give Norfolk
breathing room at 3-1.
After blasting away for a season high 41 shots
on goal Friday night in an overtime loss at Charlotte,
the Phantoms only managed 22 shots on goal in the
road-trip finale.
The Phantoms goal came as a result of Marc-Andre
Bourdon hustling to the high slot to keep in a clearing
attempt. Denis Hamel got to it in the corner and
left it for Eric Wellwood who found Laliberte between
the circles who buried his opportunity giving the
Phantoms the 1-0 lead.
But the Admirals would rush back with Berry's goals
late in the first and second periods to take the
lead.
Trailing 3-1 in the third period Denis Hamel caught
a high flip and pushed it forward to race into the
zone on a breakaway only to be hooked from behind
by Kevin Quick. Hamel was awarded the team's first
penalty shot of the year at 13:53 into the third
but his pump-fake and attempt to snap one top shelf
appeared to glance of the goalie Toharski and miss
high.
Adirondack had a power play and an extra-attacker
for a 6-on-4 advantage with 1:08 to go to try to
narrow the margin but a handful of Admirals clears
kept the Phantoms from threatening.
Norfolk outshot the Phantoms 31-22. Adirondack
held the Admirals to 0-3 on the power play. Adirondack
was 1-for-4.
