Charlotte, NC-The Adirondack
Phantoms overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 at the
Charlotte Checkers Friday night but eventually fell
in overtime by a 4-3 final as Bobby Sanguinetti's
game-winner just trickled through Johan Backlund.
Matt Clackson (1), Eric Wellwood (5) and Ben Holmstrom
(4) all scored in the Phantoms attack and Shane
Harper earned two assists in his first AHL game
of the season.
The Phantoms would blast a season-high 41 shots
on goal in the game but Checkers goalie Mike Murphy
would stymie the visitors all night long with several
dazzling stops. Backlund played a great game on
his end as well in the loss with 33 saves in the
overtime setback.
Jacob McFlicker scored a 5-on-3 goal late in the
first period and Zach Boychuk converted on a breakaway
early in the second frame staking Charlotte to an
early 2-0 advantage.
Matt Clackson's rolling, hopping dump-in from the
red line eluded Murphy and found the goal to get
the Phantoms on the board and jump-start the Adirondack
attack.
Shane Harper rushed up the left-wing and dropped
a centering feed for Eric Wellwood to chip in his
5th of the year tying the game at 2-2.
Bryan Rodney would score on the power play late
in the 2nd period as Jerome Samson would knife his
way into the zone and blast a shot off Backlund
that he would poke home.
Early in the third period it was Erik Gustafsson
blasting the puck from the left point for a mid-air
deflection off the stick of Ben Holmstrom to tie
the game at 3-3.
Adirondack had several good chances through the
third period and into the overtime as well before
Zach Boychuk would get to the puck behind the Phantoms
cage and send it out to Sanguinetti in the high
slot whose shot would hit off the arm of Backlund
and just barely make it through him and roll of
across the goal-line.
The Phantoms outshot the Checkers 41-37. Charlotte
went 2-for-4 on the power play while Adirondack
went 0-for-3.
