Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms have announced a pair of roster moves according to interim Head Coach John Paddock. Goaltender Nicola Riopel and defenseman Cullen Eddy have both been called up from Greenville (SC) of the ECHL. Both players are expected to play in tonight's game against the Charlotte Checkers.
Nic Riopel, 21, was a 5th round choice of the Flyers in 2009 out of Moncton of the QMJHL. The native of Beloeil, PQ won Quebec League Player of the Year honors as well as Goaltender of the Year going 43-11-4, 2.05, .930.
He made his professional debut in the first ever Adirondack Phantoms game on October 3, 2009. He played in 10 games with the Phantoms last season going 4-6-0, 3.35, .893 and then in December was sent back to Canadian Major Junior so he could get more playing time. In his last season with Moncton he went 19-5-0, 2.06, .918.
This season Riopel attended the 2010 training camps of the Philadelphia Flyers and Adirondack Phantoms. He was assigned to the Flyers' ECHL affiliate in Greenville where he won ECHL Goalie of the Week for week of 10/25/10 - 10/31/10 with a 2-0-0 record, 1.50 GAA, and .944 save percentage. This past Saturday he earned his first pro shutout with 32 saves vs. the Florida Everblades.
He is 6-2-1, 2.65, .918 with the Greenville Road Warriors this season.
Cullen Eddy is a 6'0" blueliner from Hidden Valley, Pennsylvania. His first AHL call-up will serve as an early birthday present for Eddy who turns 22 years old on Thursday. The Mercyhurst College product signed an ECHL contract in March of last year with the Cincinnati Cyclones and appeared in eight Kelly Cup playoff games helping Cincinnati win the league championship.
Eddy scored his first professional goal on October 29, 2010 vs. the South Carolina Stingrays. So far this season with Greenville he has one goal and two assists in seven games. He has a rating of +5 and also has 14 penalty minutes.
