Glens Falls, NY-Eric Wellwood scored his third goal in the team's last four
games as the Adirondack Phantoms dropped a 5-1 decision
at home to the Charlotte Checkers to open play for
the weekend.
The 20 year old rookie from Windsor, Ontario deflected
in a drive from the left point by Joonas Lehtivuori
in the power play in the 1st period to keep up his
hot scoring streak.
The Charlotte Checkers are the former Albany River
Rats and they also feature a former Adirondack Phantom
in Jon Matsumoto who came back to burn his former
team with one goal and two assists. Matsumoto was
the leading scorer on the Phantoms last year with
30 goals and 64 points. The Flyers traded him to
the Carolina Hurricanes organization over the off-season.
Jiri Tlusty, Jacob Mcflikier, Nick Dodge and Zach
Boychuk also lit the lamp for the Checkers who scored
three goals in the first period and two more early
in the second period in building their 5-1 cushion.
The Phantoms weren't without their chances but
were unable to capitalize on Checkers netminder
Mike Murphy who made 31 saves on 32 shots on his
way to #1 Star of the Game honors for the night.
After Charlotte got the early jump on the Phantoms
the Phantoms generated several quality scoring opportunities
but were bitten by some unfriendly puck bounces
and some timely netminding by Murphy.
Charlotte outshot the Phantoms 40-32 in the game.
Adirondack was 1-for-10 on the power play while
Charlotte went 1-for-8.
Zac Rinaldo returned to the Phantoms lineup after
missing the three games the previous weekend with
an undisclosed injury.
Congratulations go out to Phantoms captain and
defenseman Dan Jancevski who played in his 700th
career AHL game spanning a 10 year career.
J.P. Testwuide and Garrett Klotz were the team's
scratches.
The Checkers improved to 2-5-0 with the victory
while the Phantoms record moved to 2-4-1.
Charlotte is the newest team in the AHL this year
having moved up after hosting an ECHL team for the
past 17 years. They play in the East Division with
the Phantoms. This was the first of six meetings
on the year between the Flyers and Hurricanes top
farm clubs. Adirondack makes their debut appearance
at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC
with games on November 17 and 19. The Checkers next
game in Glens Falls is January 28.
Adirondack continues their weekend of play with
back to back games at the two-time defending Calder
Cup Champion Hershey Bears Saturday at 7 and Sunday
at 5.
