Phantoms Close Weekend with Tough Loss

October 17, 2010

Rochester, NY-The Adirondack Phantoms couldn't get the bounces as they dropped a 5-2 decision at the Rochester Americans Sunday evening to close their stretch of three games in three days. The Phantoms finished the weekend with an even record of 1-1-1 as they earned 3 out of 6 standings points.

Patrick Maroon scored his team leading 4th goal of the season and Joonas Lehtivuori had a goal and an assist for Adirondack.

NHL veteran Michael Nylander scored a pair of goals in the 3rd period to lead the way for the Amerks who recorded their first home win of the year.

Phantoms goalie Brian Stewart made his 2010-11 debut in net. The rookie out of Northern Michigan University played in three games late last season for Adirondack.

Adirondack appeared to have Amerks goalie Jacob Markstrom on his heels on several instances but he was able to just hang on and make some big stops to keep the Phantoms at bay.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the 3rd period, the Phantoms continued with the momentum and Maroon lifted a backhanded over an outstretched Markstrom on a rebound to cut the deficit in half. After the play a couple of penalties were doled out. Rochester was charged with a five minute major while Bourdon took a two minute minor thus things were looking promising for the Phantoms as they were set to receive three minutes of power play time.

But Nylander would score a 4-on-4 goal and then would add a shorthanded goal a couple minutes later.

Lehtivuori got one of them back with his blast off the inside of the iron from the left post to make it 4-2. The Phantoms would have some more chances and close calls after that but the Amerks were able to hang on. And then Rochester's Michael Kostka was able to bank the puck all the way down ice and into an empty net in the closing minute for the final margin.

The Phantoms outshot the Americans 27-25. Rochester went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Phantoms were 0-for-5.

Adirondack's record stands at 2-3-1 while Rochester's moved to 3-2-0.

It was the Phantoms first game against a Western Conference opponent in 2010-11. Adirondack will host the Americans on Saturday, October 30 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The two teams are slated to play each other four times this season.

The Phantoms next game is Friday night at home against the Charlotte Checkers at 7:30. The AHL's newest entry are the former Albany River Rats so some of last year's rivalry will be continued. It's dollar hot dog night for that game.

That will be the first of another three-in-three stretch for the Phantoms who will play at the Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears in a two game series next Saturday and Sunday.
