| GLENS FALLS, NY – Jeremy Duchesne stopped
all 28 shots that he faced to record his first career
American Hockey League shutout, leading the Adirondack
Phantoms to a convincing 4-0 win over Providence
Bruins Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Phantoms came out with a purpose and really
dictated the play early on. Adirondack held Providence
without a shot for the first 9:58 of play, but even
though they out-shot the Bruins 9-2, goaltender
Kevin Regan kept the game scoreless through twenty
minutes.
The play balanced a bit more in the second period
as Providence matched Adirondack’s intensity.
Phantoms goaltender Jeremy Duchesne, who was not
tested in the first period, came up with a dazzling
save midway through the frame to keep Yannick Riendeau
off the scoreboard. Just after an icing call pinned
the home team deep in their own zone, the Bruins
won the face off and raced to the net, but Riendeau
was robbed at the far post by a quick flash of the
catching glove of Duchesne. With six minutes left
in the frame David Laliberte opened the scoring
with his 16th goal of the year, banging home his
own rebound for a power play goal at 14:06, assisted
by Jared Ross and Joey Mormina.
Providence upped the pressure even more in the
third period as they out-shot the Phantoms 17-10.
With Adirondack looking a bit on their heels, Stefan
Legein broke their defensive trance by scoring his
25th goal of the season at 10:27, assisted by Logan
Stephenson and Kevin Marshall and giving the home
side some much needed breathing room. The Bruins
kept coming, forcing save after save from Duchesne,
who was outstanding. With just over two minutes
left in regulation, Providence gambled by pulling
Regan for a sixth attacker. The move backfired as
Ross scored on the empty net at 19:04, Stephenson
tallied his second assist of the game on the captain’s
eighth goal of the year. 19 seconds later Mika Pyorala
tacked on a little insult to injury as he made it
4-0 Phantoms, beating Regan with a low shot from
the right circle; Andreas Nodl and Marc-Andre Bourdon
picked up assists on Pyorala’s fifth strike
of the year.
The big story of the night was unquestionably goaltender
Jeremy Duchesne, who stopped all 28 shots that he
faced to record his first career AHL shutout, helping
the Phantoms snap a five-game winless streak and
improve to 29-32-3-2; it was also Duchesne’s
second career AHL victory and his first since the
2007-08 season. Kevin Regan allowed three goals
on 31 shots and took the loss in goal for Providence,
who dropped to 31-32-3-1 and extended their winless
streak to five games (0-4-0-1). Adirondack out-shot
the Bruins 32-28 and went 1-for-3 on the power play;
Providence was 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.
