| GLENS FALLS, NY – Defenseman Derek Smith
and captain Denis Hamel each scored twice and Mike
Brodeur stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Binghamton
Senators blanked the Adirondack Phantoms 5-0 Friday
night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Senators were very efficient in their shooting
to grab an early lead as they scored twice on their
first three shots of the game. Off a Phantoms turnover
Josh Hennessy found Erik Condra all alone in the
low slot for a backhander over the blocker of goaltender
Johan Backlund at 5:03. It was 2-0 Binghamton at
6:57 when Hennessy made a beautiful cross-ice pass
to find defenseman Derek Smith all alone on the
far post for an open net power play goal. B-Sens
captain Denis Hamel scored on a slap shot from the
left circle at 16:19 to make it 3-0 and he could
have scored again minutes later, but Backlund made
a terrific save on Hamel’s clean breakaway
effort.
The Senators captain did find the back of the net
again in the second period, scoring the team’s
fourth goal of the night at 8:54 in a low offensive
frame that saw each team manage just six shots on
goal.
Binghamton made it 5-0 late in the third period
when Erik Karlsson set up Smith for another back-door
open net goal at 15:37, their second power play
goal of the night, capping off the scoring.
Senators goaltender Mike Brodeur stopped all 21
shots he faced for his second shutout of the season
as Binghamton improved to 7-7-2-0 on the year. Adirondack
goalie Johan Backlund made 24 saves on 29 shots
and took the loss as the Phantoms dropped to 6-6-1-0.
The B-Sens out-shot Adirondack 29-21 in the game
and went 2-for-6 on the power play; the Phantoms
were 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.
Adirondack is back in action on Saturday, November
