Common Penalties
When a player is called for a penalty, he must sit in the penalty box for the duration of the penalty. His team must play "shorthanded" (at least one less player on the ice). Below is a description of some of the most common AHL penalties.
 
Boarding Hitting an opponent violently into the boards. (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Pounding the closed fist of one hand into the open palm of the other hand.
Charging Taking two or more strides before hitting an opponent (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Rotating clenched fists in front of chest. Called for taking more than three strides before checking opponent.
Cross-Checking Making contact with an opponent while holding one's stick with both hands and no part of the stick is on the ice. (2 or 5 minutes)
Ref's Signal: A forward and backward motion with fists extending from the chest. Called for hitting opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of stick on the ice.
Elbowing Hitting an opponent illegally with one's elbow. (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Tapping the elbow with the opposite hand. Called when using elbow to impede opponent.
High-Sticking Raising one's stick above shoulder level and striking an opponent. (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Holding both fists, clenched, one above the other at the side of the head. Called for carrying the stick above shoulder against opponent.
Holding Using one's hands or arms to impede an opponent. (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Clasping the wrists in front of the chest. Called for using hands on the opponent or his equipment.
Hooking Using one's stick to impede an opponent. (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: Tugging motion with arms, as called for using stick or blade to impede opponent's progress.
Interference Checking an opponent who does not have the puck. (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: Crossed arms stationary in front of the chest with fists closed.
Kneeing Using one's knee to hit an opponent. (2 minutes)
Ref's Signal: Slapping the knee with palm of hand while keeping both skates on the ice.
Roughing Minor shoving, scuffling, or fighting (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: A thrusting motion with the arm extending from the side. Called for engaging in fisticuffs or shoving.
Slashing Swinging one's stick violently at an opponent (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: Chopping with one hand across the opposite forearm. Called for swinging stick at the opponent.
Spearing Using one's stick to jab at an opponent. (5 minutes).
Ref's Signal: A jabbing motion with both hands in front of the body. Called for using the stick like a spear.
Tripping Using one's stick or a part of the body to trip an opponent. (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: Strike the leg with the right hand below the knee. Called for using stick, arm or leg to cause the opponent to trip or fall.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct Acting in an abusive manner (2 minutes).
Ref's Signal: Use both hands to form a "T" in front of chest.
Fighting Called fisticuffs in the NHL Rules book (5 minutes).
